
Dr. Johann de Wet
Dr. Johann de Wet is a dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon, and the founder of The Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Stellenbosch. The Institute serves as a leading referral centre of excellence for skin cancer patients.

Dr. de Wet earned his Fellowship from the College of Dermatologists with distinction and holds a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Dermatology, as well as a Master’s degree in Pathology, both from the University of Stellenbosch, where he graduated Cum Laude. He also completed his studies at the University of Cardiff in Wales and the University of Queensland in Australia, obtaining a Diploma in Dermatology and an MMed in Skin Cancer. Following his dermatology training, Dr. de Wet pursued a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery with the American Society of Dermatological Surgery. He also holds a fellowship from the Canadian College of Family Physicians and serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the Division of Dermatology at Stellenbosch University. As a passionate clinician, academic, and researcher, Dr. de Wet has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and is frequently invited to speak at both national and international conferences. His work has earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Peter Gordon-Smith Medal and the Jansen Research Foundation Medal from the College of Dermatologists. He was also honoured with the Rector’s Medal for Academic Excellence by Stellenbosch University. For his groundbreaking research on melanoma skin cancer and Mohs Surgery, Dr. de Wet was awarded the Discovery Foundation Academic Research Fellowship. In addition to his clinical and academic endeavours, Dr. de Wet is an active member of the Executive Committee of the Melanoma Society of South Africa, further contributing to the advancement of dermatology and skin cancer care.

Dr. Pieter du Plessis
Dr. Pieter du Plessis was trained as a dermatologist at the University of Pretoria in Pretoria, South Africa. As a registrar he spent time in the Dermatological Surgery Unit of the Department of Dermatology, University of Newcastle, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom where he received training in dermatological and formalin fixed Mohs surgery.
...After completing an American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) ITMP Fellowship in Mohs skin cancer surgery in the United States, he started the SkinMatters Mohs and Reconstruction Unit in Pretoria. He has been recognized by the ASDS International Fellowship Recognition Program as a Fellowship Director in Mohs Surgery and has trained three Fellows in Mohs Micrographic Surgery. The SkinMatters Mohs and Reconstruction Unit currently comprise of two branches, in Pretoria (Gauteng Province) and Somerset West (Western Cape Province) respectively, accommodating between them four Mohs Surgeons, seven Reconstructive Surgeons, two oculoplastic surgeons and two fully equipped Mohs frozen section laboratories. The unit has completed 17 000 Mohs surgery cases to date (2024) and has hosted international Mohs surgeons and Fellows in Mohs Surgery.
Dr du Plessis is a Past President of the South African Society of Dermatologic Surgery. He currently serves on the Exco of the Dermatologic Society of South Africa, and as Chairperson of the South African Mohs Group. He is an Overseas Fellow of the ASDS, and an International Member of Distinction of the American Society for Mohs Surgery. He has been a previous chairperson of the LCM Skin and Laser Clinic in Pretoria, and chairman, vice-chairman or committee member of the organising committees of various annual South African Dermatology Congresses. Dr du Plessis has served for two terms on the Board of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa and has been an examiner for the College of Dermatologists Part 2 exams.
Dr du Plessis has published papers in peer reviewed journals on several topics in dermatology, recently focused on Mohs Surgery, and has been an invited lecturer at local and international congresses, including as Keynote Speaker at the 2022 Annual ASDS Meeting in Denver, US.

Dr. Tshepo Mokwena
Born in the North West province, Dr. Tshepo Mokwena earned both his undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) and postgraduate qualification (FC Derm SA) from the University of Pretoria. Recognized for his excellence early on, he was awarded Best Intern of the Year and Medical Officer of the Year consecutively. He later completed his specialist dermatology training at the University of Pretoria and served as a Specialist Dermatologist in tertiary and quaternary healthcare institutions for several years.
...After practising for a few years in the State and Private sector, Dr Mokwena successfully completed his fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and currently performs Mohs surgery at Club Surgical Centre, Hazelwood, PTA which is home to the SkinMatters Mohs & Reconstruction Unit in Gauteng. Dr T.T Mokwena continues to create awareness of dermatological conditions and manages all clinical and aesthetic dermatological problems. He continues to be active in programmes directly linked to skin awareness and has been on several SABC TV and radio programmes to educate on skin-related matters. He also contributes to scientific research and to medical journals, and actively presents to general practitioners, specialists and the general public.

Dr. Mahendran Moodley
Dr Moodley completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Natal, graduating MBChB – summa cum laude. After completing internship and community service, he worked in the UK for two years before specialising in Dermatology at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban. He was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa in 2010 and has since held registration as a Specialist Dermatologist with the HPCSA.
...During his post-graduate training, he also worked at St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London. He was awarded the prestigious Janssen Research Foundation Medal in Dermatology for the top candidate in the Dermatology Part 1 examination, and in 2009 he was awarded best presentation at the South African Dermatology Congress for his work on Goltz Syndrome – a rare genetic skin disorder.
He has worked as a Consultant Dermatologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and is the first South African Dermatologist to complete a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. During this year he gained valuable experience in the treatment of skin cancer.
He continued his academic career in dermatology as a specialist at King Edward VIII Hospital and was a Lecturer in Dermatology at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine for a year, before deciding to enter private practice in the beautiful city of Cape Town.
As part of his commitment to academic medicine, his focus is on all aspects of medical dermatology and skin cancer treatment.
Dr Moodley is a keen hiker and intrepid rock scrambler. He has a passion for wild flowers and has an extensive knowledge of fynbos and indigenous flowering plants in the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Dr. Derek R. Odendaal
Dr. Derek R. Odendaal obtained his medical degree (M.B.Ch.B) in 1988 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He then spent five years in Alberta, Canada, working as a family physician with advanced surgical privileges. Upon returning to South Africa in 1995, he pursued his dermatology residency and earned his Master of Medicine in Dermatology (M.Med) in 1999.
...Since 2000, Dr. Odendaal has been in private dermatology practice in Port Elizabeth, specializing in dermatologic, Mohs, and laser surgery. He is a past President of the South African Society for Dermatologic Surgery (SASDS) and a co-founder of the South African Society of Mohs Surgery. He also established his own Mohs histopathology lab in 2018.
A respected leader in his field, Dr. Odendaal serves on the EXCO committees of both the Dermatology Society of South Africa and the Dermatologic Surgery Society of South Africa. He has also held roles as Vice President of the Assembly of National Associated Societies (ANAS) and as a board member of the Dermatology Aesthetic and Surgical International League (DASIL). Additionally, he is an active member of the International Traveling Mentorship Program (ITMP) and has worked as a trainer for Allergan Cosmetics in South Africa.
Dr. Odendaal is a sought-after speaker at both national and international conferences, particularly on skin cancer surgery. For over 15 years, he has been training fellow dermatologists in advanced dermatologic surgery and was instrumental in developing South Africa’s short course diploma in basic and advanced dermatologic surgery.
Residing in Port Elizabeth, he is married and a proud father of three.

Dr. Nivana Ramlachan
Dr. Ramlachan earned her MBChB in 1998 and achieved a fellowship with the College of Dermatology in October 2005. She is a highly regarded dermatologist in private practice, consulting at Club Surgical Center and Libertas Office Park. Notably, she is South Africa’s first female dermatologist to specialize in Mohs micrographic surgery.
...She has successfully completed her fellowship in MOHS surgery and is now a practicing dermatologist specializing in MOHS Micrographic Surgery. She is part of the MOHS Surgery Unit at Skin Matters while also running her own independent Specialist Dermatology practice in Equestria and at the Club Surgical Center in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. Her special interests in dermatology include procedural dermatology, with a focus on skin cancer management and aesthetic dermatology.

Dr. Marc Beaumont Röscher
After completing his studies as a medical doctor in 1993 at the University of Pretoria, Dr Röscher spent a length of time practicing in the UK. He began to develop an interest in Skin Care and Dermatology, and commenced the study of Dermatology in 1996, completing his degree in the year 2000.
...An extensive postgraduate at the University of Newcastle in Dermatological Surgery laid the foundation for his career. This division of Dermatology relates to surgery, cancer surgery, procedures, lasers and aesthetic procedures, including Botox and fillers.
He also completed post graduate degrees in Photodynamic Therapy in Nashville, USA, as well as Laser Surgery in Charlotte, USA.
Dr Röscher founded and directed the Dermatological Surgery Program at the Department of Dermatology, UKZN from 2006 – 2012. This was done in conjunction with Professor Aboobaker, the Head of the Department of Dermatology at the (then) Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, whose vision for this unique discipline was essential and highly appreciated. It was South Africa’s first division of Dermatological Surgery that trained dermatology residents in this discipline and continues to this day.
Dr Röscher was founder and president of the South African Society for Dermatological Surgery (SASDS) for 4 years. This SASDS conducts training and specialist education around Dermatological Surgery in South Africa.
Internationally, he serves on the faculty of the IMCAS and DASIL conference platforms and has delivered numerous papers on these and other platforms. He was also cofounder and eventual president of the DASIL international League of Dermatological and Aesthetic society in 2016.
Dr Röscher is passionate and dedicated to public service and does extensive pro-bono skin cancer screenings and treatments for indigent suffers. This is done via the platforms of TRIOMF, which is a public service medical facility group that serves specific charities. He cofounded the South African Skin Cancer Foundation, which presents annually at top level educational meetings to skin care physicians and interest health care professionals. Furthermore, this foundation executes a National Skin Cancer Screening day every September. Free skin cancer screenings are offered to the public via participating dermatologists.
